Datelined March 4, 1895 at Kohala, Hawaii, this UX8 postal card bears a strike of the
Kohala Catholic Mission,
AUXPRICHAR-KohalaCatholic.
Postal markings are the Kohala style 282.012, dated March 4, 1895, and Honolulu type
231.72 dated March 5, 1895.
A few religious, charitable or other non-profit organizations used handstamp marks.

Honolulu Catholic Mission
Catholic missionaries entered the erstwhile exclusive Protestant field in Hawaii with great
difficulty. Father Reginald Yzendoorn ably wrote the history of their mission in
"History of the Catholic Mission in Hawaii," Honolulu Star-Bulletin, 1927.

St. Louis College
Begun by Catholic missionaries near Kahaluu on Windward Oahu, the school was moved to Honolulu in 1880, where it
operated temporarily out of an existing building on land owned by the Catholic Church along Beretania Street. The
new college opened in 1882 across Nuuanu Stream from the old premises.
